Arrow Through Head, 1998

The usability and the creation of meaning are up to the beholder (end-consumer). A statement which not only avowedly and provocatively links directly to the world of goods and consumption, but also directly transfers responsibility to the recipient. »Bild Dir Dein Bild« [Form your own view] [1] and conceive an opinion! These appellative invitations of the tabloid press become transformed in the strategy of BEWEGUNG NURR which made itself present shortly after its formation with a striking visual action in Dresden of the early 1990s. Slightly anarchistic but equipped with a good portion of creative humour and therefore a disruptive element in the well-worn reception of art. »Schrödingers Katze ist tot« [»Schroedinger’s cat is dead«] could be read there on house walls. Perhaps not many Dresden residents knew who this Schroedinger’s cat had been, but through this Situationist campaign they reached beyond the painter-obsessed sentiment of the city on the Elbe and with one blow obtained a lot of publicity for artistic group actions beyond the representational art object and performance.

Arrow Through Head, 1998

The path of the group until present can be followed in the catalogue at hand. The perseverance, stability and tirelessness of the group, that is to say the group’s actionist programme, is remarkable. In times of rapid changes, media saturation and a more profound crisis in the conceptual approaches of visual art, it is astonishing that the members of the NURR group indefatigably and obstinately proceed to shed light culture value systems as well as illuminate the values in terms of their entanglements and ramifications. System critical approaches are rare in galleries and museums during times of painting boom and the downfall of net art. It’s not clear yet who is going to win, but at the end of the day this is not relevant anymore. In a capitalist system, which probably doesn’t have a future but is stable enough and will one day implode in something else (whatever that might be), staying the course is the rallying cry. Even and especially in operating system art as a part of the whole system of civilisation. And where you’re from, where you’re standing and where you’re going can be best seen in such a general catalogue. Afterwards updating your own position becomes easier
