Bay Watch, 2004

Wreck, 2004, in cooperation with Peter Sandhaus (installation at P/////AKT, Amsterdam)

Bay Watch, 2004

The 2002 initiated POSEIDON project shows the history of a nautical expedition. The failure of this collective expedition, the goal of which is the study of the threat scenario created by the artists themselves, finds its thematic focus in: the FANTA wave, a freak wave made from the orange lemonade of the Coca Cola group. The origins and dynamics of freak waves remain largely unexplored. They appear abruptly and endanger shipping and coastal areas. The threat potential of the FANTA wave manifests itself in its force and its stickiness. It acts as a metaphor for the force of globally disorganised capitalism. BEWEGUNG NURR and Peter Sandhaus turn the question of how best to meet this threat scenario into a matter of equipment. The sculptures emerging from the project show POSEIDON brand equipment artefacts which bear witness to the damage caused to the expedition in light of the overpowering FANTA wave. Relying on the technical and logistical equipment, the POSEIDON project becomes a documentation of failure at a high level. The sculpture Wreck, a model of a submarine wreck which forms the focal point of the series of works, should allow the expedition participants a quasisubversive dip into the research object. In the POSEIDON project, Sandhaus and NURR discuss the relevance of subversity in relation to capitalism’s ablility to appropiate any kind of subversion for ist own purposes.

Global Sugar Shock by Peter Lang   //   translated by William Macdougall

Wave graphics, divers’ tanks with mouthpieces, pictures of orange-coloured waves, a torn-off submarine tower, Baywatch mermaids. The BEWEGUNG NURR and Peter Sandhaus present the POSEIDON Project, a fictional expedition, the failure of which has already been set out from the beginning.

For a long time, stories about giant waves were considered to be sailors’ yarns. In sea wave theory, the gradated school model generally applied: all schoolchildren tend to be around the same size. A child two to three times larger than normal just isn’t imaginable. According to mathematical models, the probability of the appearance of a 30 metre wave – with the average storm wave measuring 12 metres – lay at 10-5, amounting to one such wave in 100,000 years. Only just recently possible comprehensive computer analyses obtained from the archive of globally recorded satellite pictures of the world’s oceans surprisingly show a pattern of monster waves. Measurements taken over a period of four years counted 24 such waves. Then this: measurements recorded by the German Aerospace Center’s ENVISAT satellite detected 10 waves between 25 and 30 metres high within a three week wave analysis. Graphic representations revealed the fundamentally different characteristic of these waves, which, for this reason, are also known as freak waves. They are abnormal occurrences.

POSEIDON, 2003, in cooperation with Peter Sandhaus (installation at ABEL Neue Kunst)

Following the artists’ poetic metaphor that expanding, disorganised global capitalism can also be conceived of as a freak wave and citing the Coca Cola concern’s sticky FANTA wave as an example, it is possible to recognise the threat potential. The unpleasant feeling of being swept away sets in. Global sugar shock becomes a symbol and you visualise a victory flag fluttering on the berg of sweet slurry under which you are buried. And the winner is: the global player Coca Cola. This inevitably leads to the question of how to deal with rapidly expanding globalisation. One possibility is a symbolic nautical expedition. Similar to a freak wave, the FANTA wave’s threat potential lies in its vehemence, added to which comes its unpleasant stickiness. Like any good expeditionists, the BEWEGUNG NURR and Peter Sandhaus take care of the equipment first of all. POSEIDON brand products are used and assimilated for a submarine (more specifically, OHIO class, nuclear-powered, USA). The mythology of the sea god of the same name and its reception comes as an added bonus. In their attempt not to produce anything unnecessary, the group documents the failure of this expedition in its sculptural elements and pictures. As with Franz Kafka’s calculating Poseidon, the intent to explore and understand don’t help against the global cash register, from which the FANTA wave also pours out. One is occupied with going over the bills until the world goes under. And then, shortly before the end, it’s perhaps possible to take one final trip over the ocean.

Freak waves are unstoppable, their threat potential is of a general nature and worldwide. The Tsunami at the end of 2004, which completely devastated parts of India, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the island group Andam, Nicobar and the Maldives as well as Somalia and Sumatra, was an indicator of an important aspect of globalisation. Granted, the majority of victims came from the countries mentioned above, but the number of dead and injured among travellers from Western industrial nations, especially the northern European ones, was substantial. Probably not since the Battle of Poltawa in 1709 have so many Swedes died in one day. In 2004, the Tsunami was responsible for swelling the number of Swedish infant mortalities to twice the normal rate. »Those poor people down there« were present in the agitated western public’s perception, however, the fate of the affected tourists and their relatives dominated the media. The available stockpile of sympathy only applies to the known, identifiable, and less to the mass of Asian victims remaining anonymous. Occasionally there were undertones lending a different interpretation of the catastrophe as cleansing Biblical Flood. On the devastated beach of Kao Lak a German hotel owner openly spoke to a camera team of his joy about the prospect of proper building finally taking place.

For international seafaring, the worst case scenario has appeared with the potentially continuing threat. Nothing can be done to protect oneself against it, but instead the eventuality must be economically calculated for. That touches upon ethical problems. There is not enough for everybody, neither is there protection for everyone either. Societal developments appear to be similar to phenomena occuring in the natural sciences in following non-linear mathematical models. That is not exactly comforting, but refers to the future model for describing societal developments. We will probably have to consult chaos theory models more and more. That this knowledge was not available at the time of these complex societal models’ development and still isn’t, means that it could not and cannot be applied to societies. Probably socio-economic and associated cultural phenomena may follow the Law of large Numbers. This assumption dispenses with a higher order of things and lacks a reconciliatory dimension. Not even the Marxist model of general equality and poverty can be used as a stop-gap, which only leads to Kant. Everything that exists is worth decaying. Or to the general axiom, that the movement of the known universe, of which the civilisation on the planet earth is a biological special case, is a constant oscillation between chaos and order.

Fanta Wave Emerging, 2005, in cooperation with Peter Sandhaus

The POSEIDON project offers a link between the scientific research of freak waves and the progressing globalisation of economies and societies. NURR and Sandhaus acknowledge the destructive force of the freak waves as well as the globalisation wave, to which their fictitious expedition also succumbed. The artists present articles of equipment, models, first results as well as visualisations of the threat itself in the form of paintings and screenprints following the style of a museum expedition exhibitions. The reasons for the final failure of the expedition – material and approach inappropriate to the object of research – become apparent to the eye in each piece of work within the collection. As well as cartographic documents, numerous drawings and paintings emerged from the expeditions before the beginning of the 20th century. As was the case with one of the most well-known expeditions, that of Captain Robert Fitzroy and Captain Parker King to South America, better known as the Beagle expedition under Charles Darwin. As a matter of course, the expeditionists also produced drawings and paintings of clouds and waves as well as biological and zoological ones. Photography later replaced these forms of documentation.

For Advancement Only, 2002

Baywatch dares to show a view of the future. Or is it already of our time? Originally an advertising motif, this picture is reminiscent in mood and composition of commissioned religious painting, in particular, Jesus’ Descent from the Cross. However, the customary funeral-like seriousness of expression is only to be seen in the rescuer, who has arrived too late. The others watch the scene indifferently. As would be expected, they are all wearing jeans – casual wear. They appear to be unaware of the danger of the wave or else ignore it. The same as is also the case with the fact that the Baywatch mermaid has given her life for them. Those living by the FANTA sea have long since grown accustomed to the levelling force of globalisation. The attempts of the female lifeguard were in fact condemned to failure from the beginning.

Wreck, 2004, in cooperation with Peter Sandhaus (installation at P/////AKT, Amsterdam)

In a very individualistic manner, the artists follow Paul Virilios’ thesis which suggests that failure is implicit to art, and make failure set against a background of globalisation the subject of their work. It is disillusioning to see how the attempts at criticising globalisation are anticipated in POSEIDON, and at the same time it is well observed how increasing commercialisation soaks awareness of the problem and finally rinses it away, especially where the FANTA sea breaks against the apparently calm strand.
